Sister Corita Bussanmas, co-founder of Operation Breakthrough, passed away 03-27-21 at the age of 87. A 50-year champion of children and families facing adversity, Sister Corita spent most of her life providing social services, education and health for those most in need.
“I have truly loved getting to know Sister Corita. She is one of those rare individuals who always saw the glass as “half full”—no matter what the circumstance—programming, people, support, sports, the list is endless. She believed in people and their potential, noting that many of those she spent her life serving remain overlooked and unseen. Sister Corita was an amazing trailblazer and her impact will be felt for many years to come,” said Mary Esselman, current Operation Breakthrough CEO.

I would like to extend my Sympathy at the passing of Sis. Corita.
I was a student at St. Vincent/Operation Breakthrough 1973-74 while they had the elementry school & child care center on 31st & Flora. I was also Blessed to be able to help with the book they put together a few years ago. Both ladies are Angels walking on Earth. If you have the pleasure of knowing/sharing a part of your life with them you ARE BLESSED. I'm 60 years old and still "smile" at the memories I have of the time I spent with them, raising chicken's from egg's & eating them. Riding along with/as Sis. Berta "learned" how to drive a clutch bus. All the LOVING people that worked with them during my 2 years at St. Vincents/Operation Breakthrough. - Stephanie Palmer-Sillimon

Angel among us
Since hearing of the news of the passing of Sr. Corita Bussanmus, the many memories I was so fortunate to have shared with her and Sr. Berta throughout my childhood have filled my mind. The many holidays they spent with my family once prompted a childhood friend to ask who they were to which I replied “they’re my Kansas City grandmas.” They were part of my family and as they have proved time and time again blood does not determine who your family is. No holiday was complete without me and my siblings eagerly awaiting the arrival of Berta and Corita and squealing with delight when they arrived. If we were having a celebration Berta, Corita, and all their children over the years were sure to be there.
As anyone who knows these two ladies knows Corita was the quieter of the two, but one could not mistake the gentle strength that Corita exuded. When I picture being in her presence, I feel an overwhelming sense of peacefulness, never ending love, and joy. She was always the one who would sit by my side and listen to me tell her stories while I put black olives on my fingers as a young girl. I can still hear her deep laughter at something silly I did. To this day I love black olives and think of Corita every time I eat them.
One can’t reflect on Corita Bussanmus and not think about Operation Breakthrough. My childhood was filled of stories about the early days of Operation Breakthrough and I have always been in awe of what they have accomplished. Corita’s never ending advocacy for children and those less fortunate has been a constant source of inspiration for me throughout my life. I strive to model myself after her in my teaching career. My dad gave me some excellent advice when I was a beginning teacher and it of course involved a story about Sr. Corita. “You have to have a look” he told me and proceeded to tell me a story of how Corita, who was running an inner city school would enter a room and with one look would quiet the room. Having seen first hand the determination she showed in fighting for their kids, I know she was not someone you wanted on the opposing side and have no doubt her ability to manage a classroom with a single look.
Another part of her legacy that I remind myself of every time I enter my classroom is to remain positive and find the good in each child because that is exactly what Sr. Corita did in every encounter she had with a child.
On March 27, 2021 the world lost a women whom I believe was an angel walking among us. The lasting impact that she had on the lives of everyone around her will no doubt continue to be felt for generations to come. May you Rest In Peace sweet lady. I will never forget you.- Katie Koch Yeckel

In honor of Sr Corita
She was 88 years old and she has passed to the other side
She and Sr. Berta started Operation Breakthrough as a small operation in the 70s to care for children of the working poor in the urban core. It has grown exponentially over the years and added medical/dental services, food services, college application help and after school care and likely other things I don’t know about. Services are state subsidized.
Srs. Corita and Bertha exemplify for me a life well lived that watches over those who cannot speak - our working poor neighbors, children who otherwise starve or are in danger, moms and dads and grandparents going for a better life for their family.
So it’s a huge relief for me this institution will be here hundreds of years after they are gone- even if losing the Sister is one great lantern gone from our life.
Just think.
It started with two women who took in 50 kids - infant to preschool - and loved them. And then they just kept fighting for the good of all.
Just two people.
Please
Never underestimate your ability to change the lives of your community or the people you love
**Ever**
